Liverpool Advocates for Windrush (L.A.W.) stands at the forefront of addressing the injustices arising from the Windrush scandal. Officially constituted in October 2023, our roots extend back to 2018, when our voluntary efforts began. With one of our co-founders being a second-generation Windrush descendant and a direct victim of this injustice, our commitment is well-informed.

- Definition of the Windrush Generation: The 'Windrush generation' refers to Caribbean individuals who arrived in the UK between 1948 and 1971, starting with the arrival of the ship HMT Empire Windrush in 1948. This group was invited to the UK to address post-war labour shortages and subsequently faced challenges due to evolving immigration policies.
- Organisational Independence: We maintain complete independence from Government bodies, including Immigration Services, the Home Office, and the Police.
- Scope of the Windrush Compensation Scheme: The Windrush Compensation Scheme is designed primarily to address losses related to employment, access to services, housing, healthcare, and issues surrounding detention and removal. Importantly, it includes a category for 'Impact on Life', which, while not directly compensating for discrimination or racism, can cover the broader effects of these experiences.

- The Immigration Act 1971 introduced the concept of 'patriality', affecting the status of Commonwealth citizens.
- The British Nationality Act 1981 created complexities in the citizenship status of Commonwealth citizens.
- The Immigration Act 1988 removed certain rights of abode for British subjects.
- The Immigration, Asylum and Nationality Act 2006 intensified measures contributing to the 'hostile environment'.
